Cash Buget Essay
The Cash Budget One of the major functions of corporate finance is to anticipate the need for funds in the company. Although there are several methods for forecasting these needs, the cash budget is the most accurate (and most commonly used) method available. Cash flows through a company like water flows through a pipe. (See the cash flow pipeline.) A cash budget essentially maps out these cash flows and indicates the period in which they will occur. Cash budgeting, at its core, is a very simple procedure that simulates cash flowing through a company. If we can accurate estimate (1) the amounts and (2) the timing of these cash flows, then we can also estimate whether the company will experience a shortage of cash (or an excess of cash) during any given month. The primary cash inflows for a company consist of (1) cash sales and (2) collection of accounts receivable. An accurate sales forecast is a necessity if we are to construct an accurate cash budget. If we then know the terms that we sell on (2/10, net 30, for example) and the past payment experience of our customers, we can estimate the amount and timing of these collections. The primary cash outflows are generally (1) payments on purchases, (2) labor costs, and (3) capital purchases (i.e., fixed assets). Other large payments may include rent, taxes, and These and other cash outflows must be estimated as to the amount and timing of the payments. Pro Forma Statements It is also useful to know what the companyââ¬â¢s income statement will look like for the forecasted period and what the balance sheet will look like at the end of the forecasted period. If either of these two statements show weaknesses, we can plan now to take steps that will prevent these deficiencies from occurring. Fortunately, cash budgets and pro forma statements are easily programmed using electronic spreadsheets like Microsoft Excel. This is especially handy since cash budgets involve a large number of relatively simple calculations. Spreadsheets Cash budgets are usually placed on an electronic spreadsheet, where data may be entered and updated frequently. The two spreadsheets below are examples of spreadsheets for 3-month and 12-month planning periods. An Illustration Letââ¬â¢s consider a sample cash budgeting problem, with its solution. An explanation of how the numbers are determined may be seen by clicking on the appropriate links in the ââ¬Å"Solutionâ⬠section of this page. A SAMPLE PROBLEM Glenda Byers has gathered the data below needed for the preparation of a cash budget for the months of October, November, and December. SALES: (Actual sales for August and September, forecasted sales for October ââ¬â February) August | $ 45,000 | September | 54,000 | October | 65,000 | November | 75,000 | December | 93,000 | January | 71,000 | February | 55,000 | Based on the past history and current credit terms offered by her firm, Glenda has estimated the following payment schedule for sales: 25% of total sales will be cash sales; à 60% of total sales will be collected in the month following the sale; 15% of total sales will be collected in the second month following the sale . (Note: Notice that since the three above collections total 100%, no bad debts on accounts receivable are anticipated. If we anticipated a 2% bad debt rate, we could change the 15% number above to 13%. We would then be anticipating that we would collect only 98% of the total sales.) PURCHASES The companyââ¬â¢s markup on inventory is two-thirds of the cost (e.g. a $40 profit on an item which cost $60.) In other words, the cost of the merchandise is 60% of the final selling price. The firm purchases enough inventory to cover sales one month in the future. Based on current credit terms, Glenda expects the following repayment schedule: 12% of purchases are paid for in cash; 78% are paid one month following the purchase, and 10% are paid for two months after the purchase. EXPENSES (per month, unless otherwise noted): Mortgage Payment | $ 2,300 | Wages and Salaries | 3,200 | Lease Payments | 750 | Capital purchases (to be purchased in October) | 7,600 | Property Taxes (to be paid in December) | 11,800 | Other Expenses (%) | 10% of sales | FURTHER ASSUMPTIONS 1. Cash: * As of October 1st, the firm has $3,000 in its checking account at the bank. * The firm desires to have a minimum cash balance of $3,000 at all times. 2. Loan Information: * As of October 1st, the companyââ¬â¢s loan balance was $2,000. * The companyââ¬â¢s bank requires that interest be paid each month. The interest to be paid is the interest due on the previous monthââ¬â¢s loan balance. The interest rate is 1.0% per month on the outstanding balance at the end of the previous month. 3. Fixed Assets: The firm depreciates all capital equipment purchases over a five-year period using the straight line method. 4. Minimum inventory: The firm keeps $30,000 of safety stock on hand at all times.

Definition and Examples of Bad News Messages
In business writing, a bad-news message is a letter, memo, or email that conveys negative or unpleasant informationââ¬âinformation that is likely to disappoint, upset, or even anger a reader. It is also called anà indirect message or a negative message. Bad-news messages include rejections (in response to job applications, promotion requests, and the like), negative evaluations, and announcements of policy changes that dont benefit the reader. A bad-news message conventionally begins with a neutral or positive buffer statement before introducing the negative or unpleasant information. This approach is called the indirect plan. Examples and Observations It is much, much worse to receive bad news through the written word than by somebody simply telling you, and Iââ¬â¢m sure you understand why. When somebody simply tells you bad news, you hear it once, and thatââ¬â¢s the end of it. But when bad news is written down, whether in a letter or a newspaper or on your arm in felt tip pen, each time you read it, you feel as if you are receiving the bad news again and again. (Lemony Snicket, Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Cant Avoid. HarperCollins, 2007) Sample: Rejection of a Grant Application On behalf of the members of the Research Scholarship Committee, thank you for submitting an application for this years Research Scholarship grants competition. Iââ¬â¢m sorry to report that your grant proposal was among those that were not approved for funding in the spring. With the reduction in grant funds caused by budget cuts and the record number of applications, Iââ¬â¢m afraid that many worthwhile proposals could not be supported. Although you did not receive a grant this year, I trust that you will continue to pursue both internal and external funding opportunities. Introductory Paragraph The introductory paragraph in the bad-news message should accomplish the following objectives: (1) provide a buffer to cushion the bad news that will follow, (2) let the receiver know what the message is about without stating the obvious, and (3) serve as a transition into the discussion of reasons without revealing the bad news or leading the receiver to expect good news. If these objectives can be accomplished in one sentence, that sentence can be the first paragraph. (Carol M. Lehman and Debbie D Dufrene, Business Communication, 15th ed. Thomson, 2008) Body Paragraph(s) Deliver the bad news in the body of the message. State it clearly and concisely, and explain the reasons briefly and unemotionally. Avoid apologies; they weaken your explanation or position. Try to embed the bad news in a supporting, not the topical, sentence of a paragraph. Furthermore, try to embed it in a subordinate clause of a sentence. The purpose is not to conceal the bad news, but to soften its impact. (Stuart Carl Smith and Philip K. Piele, School Leadership: Handbook for Excellence in Student Learning. Corwin Press, 2006) Closing The closing of a message containing negative news should be courteous and helpful. The purpose of the closing is to maintain or rebuild goodwill. ... The closing should have a sincere tone. Avoid overused closings such as If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to call. ... Offer the receiver another option. ... Presenting another option shifts the emphasis from the negative news to a positive solution. (Thomas L. Means, Business Communications, 2nd ed. South-Western Educational, 2009)

Positive Role Models Are Those Who Possess The Qualities...
Positive role models are those who possess the qualities that I would love to have and even improve on. They are those who have affected me in ways that make me want to be a better person in ways such as volunteering in the community. They help me to advocate for myself when I am falling short, help me on my steps to taking a leadership position, and even speak out on the issues that I feel strongly about. I often donââ¬â¢t tend to recognize positive role models until I have noticed my own personal growth. Knowing that it really implies that it takes a positive role model to know one. Some positive role models are teachers, clergy members, counselors and even friends. Throughout my life, I have had many teachers as positive role models. Some teachers teach right to the tests while others show real world examples and even visit the places that we are learning about and that is what stands out to me. Aubrey, my core teacher in Israel, really exemplifies this and is very committed and an amazing role model that really stands out. Aubrey taught the core curriculum I was a part of while studying in Israel. It is an intense study of Israel and 4,000 years of Jewish history. It comprises of many things such as engaging classroom study and even life-changing trips to the sites where history took place. The Universal Health Care System - 1712 Words
Every country vision is to have a universal health care system. A system that is not necessary ââ¬Å"freeâ⬠but a system where everyone has equal opportunity to get the best health care being offered without any partiality. Canada successfully implemented the universal health care to its citizens, but it is not perfect in any sense. Individualsââ¬â¢ citizens are provided with preventive care and medical treatment from primary care physicians as well as access to hospitals. There are still many services that are not covered or partially covered (Canadian Health Care, 2014-2017). Prescription medication, physiotherapy, ambulance services, prescription eyeglasses as well as dental care are some of the services that are not covered under the health care system (Canadaââ¬â¢s universal health-care system, 2015)). Some Provinces may provide partial coverage for mental health patients, children living in poverty as well as old people. With the implementation of the Affordable Car e Act in 2012, we can now say that the U.S. is on the road to hopefully having a universal health care system or a system that covered most residents. The Affordable care act can be considered to be the most significant overhaul of the health care industry in decades since the defeat of the Clinton Health Security Act of 1993(Sultz and Young, 2013). Learning Free Essays
Many psychologists have had debates with the concept of learning. Nature versus nurture is two concepts that many psychologists have argued over. Learning is a cause of someoneââ¬â¢s change in behavior through experience, practice, and skills. We will write a custom essay sample on Learning or any similar topic only for you Order Now In this paper, the subjects to describe is, the concept of learning, distinguishing between learning and performance, and finally compare and contrasting the conceptual approaches to the study of learning. Concept of Learning Learning has many definitions. Learning is the process of knowledge through education, observation, teaching, and past and present experiences for individuals (humans or animals). According to Terry (2009), ââ¬Å"learning is the acquisition of knowledge and may be defined as a relatively permanent change in behavior, or behavioral repertoire that occurs as a result of experienceâ⬠(p. 5). According to Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (1999), ââ¬Å"Learning is complex, transformational, natural, and life-long, multi-level, fundamentally personal, yet also social, active and interactive, measurable, and greatly influenced by organizational factors, including structuresâ⬠(p. 3). As mentioned before, nature versus nurture has been a big debate. The nature theory is that humansââ¬â¢ behavior is biologically encoded in human DNA. Psychologists believe that humans are preprogrammed from birth. The nurture theory believes that human behavior learned thru life experiences. Humans learn behavior from what they do, read, and observe. I believe that both influence humansââ¬â¢ behavior. Humans learn behavior from life experiences, and through educating themselves. Learning is an ongoing process that humans endure. Learning is based on different knowledge that humans have acquired over the years. Learning happens when a person develops new abilities, values, preferences, and skills. There are two important aspects of behavioral learning theory that been used. They are classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Classical conditioning is a learning process that occurs between environmental stimuli and is a natural stimulus. Operant conditioning is an association between a behavior and a consequence. Distinguishing Between Learning and Performance Learning usually increases with days of practice. With practice, he or she needs a reinforcement (positive or negative) to remember the training or practice. Sometimes if a reward is too much, or not enough, it can affect the learning. When someone is learning something new, the reinforcement should be during or right after the practice or training. A delay in reward can affect the learning process. At the beginning of a new training, reinforcement has been learning during and then gradually making the reinforcements further apart. Some influences affect performance but not learning. Motivation affects the way people perform. For example, watching a softball game, the girls are more motivated when they are winning. If someone takes the same test after test after test, he or she can become bored. Being bored can decrease a personââ¬â¢s performance. Compare and Contrast the Conceptual Approaches to the Study of Learning There are four different conceptual approaches to the study of learning. They are functional approach, behavioral approach, cognitive approach, and neuroscience approach. According to Terry (2009), ââ¬Å"The functional approach studies how learning and remembering aid survivalâ⬠(p. 19). According to Terry, ââ¬Å"The behavioral approach emphasizes the relationship among, first, observable behaviors, second, the antecedent stimuli that precede behavior, and third, the consequences that follow behaviorâ⬠(p. 20). According to Terry, ââ¬Å"The cognitive approach derives from computer-influenced, information-processing approaches to the mindâ⬠(p. 20). According to Terry, ââ¬Å"The neuroscience approach has existed in parallel with both the earlier behavioral and the newer cognitive perspectivesâ⬠(p. 21). Each approach is very important for psychologist to learn and understand. Each approach has its own unique way at looking at behavior. When comparing functional approach to behavioral approach there are somewhat differences. Functional approach is that an animal or human adapts to their environment. In functional approach psychologist can study learning across different species around the world. In behavioral approach psychologist, observe humans or animals in a situation that has stimuli to change behavior. When comparing cognitive approach to neuroscience approach there are some items that are similar. Cognitive approach is looking at how humans processes information, knowledge, encode, store, and retrieve what humans have learned. In neuroscience approach psychologist, study the brain to see how humans retrieve information in the brain. Each approach looks at behavior and leaning differently but is measuring the same thing. Conclusion Humans or animals never stop learning. Psychologists observe human behavior, so that psychologist can understand how humans and animals interact with one another. Learning will always be looked at differently from different psychologist. There will never be a true answer to how or why humans learn. As an eyewitness to a crime, how could you use information in this chapter to improve your memory for specific details? If you were a juror, what would you say to the other jurors about the reliability of eyewitness testimony? As an eyewitness to a crime you try to remember the events in chunks, instead of the event as a whole. You can all us your sense to recall particular events you witnessed or you can also repeat the events over several different times in your head. The repetition of the events has to occur right after the event in order to avoid outside influences to that memory. As a juror I would let other Jurors know that the reliability of eyewitness testimony is unreliable, due to the fact that the eyewitness has already been poisoned by the covered of the events in the media. Most eyewitnesses see events very differently, and any catch part of what is going on with the event. During the Gilded Age, many industrialists were co Essay Example For Students
During the Gilded Age, many industrialists were co Essay nsidered robber barons. They were in fact, because of the monopolies they created, the large amounts they stole from the American people, and their selfish attitudes. A few of these industrialists were Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and J.P. Morgan. These men established large monopolies and bought out all other little businesses. This made it impossible for competition of any kind. For example, John D. Rockefeller joined with smaller companies through trust agreements and mergers. These mergers were simply Rockefeller buying out all of his competitors without looking like the bad guy. He would also sell his oil for a lower price than others so they would go out of business and he would take over their customers. Many industrialists said that they gave to charities and set up foundations for the poor people in the society and that it was okay for them to have such large monopolies. In my opinion, they were only robbers of the common people. With all of the money these men were making, they should have been helping the American people, but they werent; they were robbing them. With cheap labor and poor conditions, these giants were stealing tons of money from the United States. After lowering their prices to beat out competitors, they would raise them up higher than they originally were, in order to make large profits for themselves. By paying their workers very low wages; these robbers also made more money for themselves. These industrialists stole a lot of money from the American people during the Gilded Age through their many different tactics. Many of these men had very selfish attitudes about their wealth. They believed that if they worked hard all of their life, then they deserved everything they got. They often felt good about what they were doing because they thought that they were stronger and smarter and fit to be in charge of large companies. They used the term Social Darwinism to justify their wealth. Many of them set up foundations and gave tons of money to charities and said that they were good for society. When in fact, they were bad for society and they were very selfish and had bad attitudes for their businesses. As you see, many of the industrialists of the Gilded Age should be called robber barons. They created huge monopolies, robbed the American people, and had selfish attitudes. .

à No Christian should ever have an abortion Essay This statement is very controversial people can believe it completely or can have doubts. It all depends on which branch of Christianity you are a part of. The Roman Catholic Church is the firmest believer in this statement. They do not consider abortion any different from infanticide when a parent murders their child. They believe that abortion is a very serious crime, and that it should be punished by law. Because of this firm standing against abortion, it is not unusual for a catholic family to have lots of children. They believe that, no matter the circumstances, the pregnancy should be seen through. If you are a Roman Catholic, then you are supposed to believe that abortion should be punished by law. The United States Methodists are a little more lenient on the subject. They also consider abortion a very serious matter, but stop short on saying that it should be punished by law. They simply say that it is a very serious crime. They do not allow abortions, but they do not think it suitable to punish anybody who participates in any part of an abortion. By saying that abortion is a sin, they hope that the person concerned will feel guilty and will not go ahead with the abortion. No church could possibly say that abortion is a good thing. The Church of England says that abortion is a sin. However, they do acknowledge the fact that there may be times when an abortion may be the best option (in the event of rape). They agree that abortion is a sin, as it is killing a human being, but they also say that to withdraw compassion is also a sin, so both sides of the argument should be considered. The UK Methodists point of view is very similar to that of the Church of Englands. They realise that the feelings of the mother of the unborn child must be considered. They consider abortion an evil, but say that sometimes it is the lesser of two evils. They also make the valid point of saying that it is best for abortion to remain legal and controlled, rather than it being illegalised again and women resorting to back-street abortions, where the process is a danger to the health of the mother. My personal opinion is that abortion should remain legal. I agree with the statement from the UK Methodists, that it is better for it to remain legal and controlled, rather than being made illegal and therefore unsafe. I dont think that anybody could really agree with abortion. Whichever way you look at it, you are killing an unborn child. However, I think that there are some times when abortion may be necessary. For instance, if a woman is raped and it results in a pregnancy, there is no way that she would want to keep the baby. I think in cases such as these, abortion may be necessary. However, if a woman finds herself pregnant unexpectedly and she has not used contraceptives, then I think that she should be made to see out the pregnancy, as it is her fault that she has fallen pregnant. There are always two sides to every argument. There may be some Roman Catholics who, because of their religion, are made to firmly disagree with abortion, but personally, they do not think that it is as great a sin as the church says it is. They may find themselves in a dilemma, being pulled one way by the church, and another by their own opinions. I do not think that just because you belong to a certain branch of Christianity, that you should have the same beliefs about everything as your church. By all means, listen to what your church has to say on the issue, and listen to other peoples points of view. This will help you to form an opinion of your own, not that of your church or of other people.
